If you are a newbie to the task of raising chickens, let me give you some advice to help you build chicken coop. Humans are not the only ones with a healthy appetite for chicken. There are a number of very savvy predators that will use every possible technique to avail themselves of a free meal at the expense of your hard work. Numerous chicken farmers have invested time and money only to wake early one morning to the site of a chicken massacre. Chickens need protection and that protection comes in the form of a sturdy pen.

Regardless of whether you live in the city or the most remote rural setting, predators exist. Whether it’s the neighbor’s dog, wolves, foxes, mountain lions, etc., plan on being tested. Your pen will have to be constructed based on your location and local threats. For example, if you live in the city where your biggest threat is the hungry German Sheppard down the block your requirements will be different than if you live in the mountains of California where mountain lions can easily make their way over an 8 ft. high fence. Begin your planning by analyzing your threats, and take this into account when you build chicken coop.

First, find a suitable location on which to construct the pen. The best place is an open location with hard ground. Trees or other objects near the pen can be used by climbing animals to get over the fence. Soft ground makes it easy for a determined dog to dig its way underneath. Also, keep in mind obstacles that are already in place. High fences or the side of a barn can be used as a side of the pen making the job easier.

At the very minimum you will want to build chicken coop with a fence made of chicken wire that is at least 6 feet high. Remember, chickens can’t take to the air, but their wings do help them to jump real high. If you live in an area with big cats or other climbing predators, you should consider putting fencing over the top of the pen also. This will allow you to keep the sides shorter and will add an extra layer of protection.

To prevent burrowing animals such as dogs and foxes form getting in the pen, you have two good options. The best option is to place the pen on a concrete slab. Though sure to prevent burrowing, it is also expensive and unless you have a pre poured spot, is likely out of the question. The next best solution is to sink your fence about 18 inches into the ground. Simply dig a trench around the perimeter of your pen and erect the fence inside. Eighteen inches will keep out all but the hungriest and most persistent predators.

Remember, chickens make tasty meals to hungry animals and need good protection. A little extra time to build chicken coop can save you from a lot of wasted effort – just make sure you follow a good guide.
