If you’ve decided that you want to raise chickens then that’s great – but one of the first things you’re going to need to consider are the different types of chicken coop designs to house your chickens in. Here is a quick guide to various types available.
Small Coops
If you only want around two to three birds then small chicken coop designs will suit you. They are generally made up of an enclosed roosting area, with an outdoor space protected by wire. This is the very simplest design, and the A-frame design is generally the most popular. You should make sure that the indoor space leaves at least two/three square feet for each chicken.
Medium Coops
Medium coops are, naturally, larger than a small coop but they are usually elevated off the ground so that the manure can fall through.
Large Coops
This type of design is particularly useful if you want to be able to walk inside the coop to clean it. This is often known as a “hen house” and this is particularly popular if you already have an old shed that you want to remodel for your chickens.
Chicken Arks
These kind of coops are built onto wheeled frames that can be moved around whenever you want. The size of the coop will differ depending on how easy it is for you to move it around (as well as the number of chickens you plan to keep).
The size of your chicken coop designs will depend largely on how much space you have available in your backyard and how many chickens you’d eventually like to keep there. It’s important to follow a solid plan if you’re going to be building your own coop to ensure it’s safe for both you and your chickens.
