If you’ve got limited space in your yard, or only want a small number of chickens, the small chicken coop plans are the best option for you. These are useful for five chickens or less, and can make building the coop a lot quicker and cheaper.
There are many different small chicken coop plans out there, and here is a quick guide to picking the right one for you if you’re having a hard time.
The A-Frame
The most popular type of small coop is the A-frame coop. This kind of coop is easy to build if you dedicate just a whole day to it. The main thing is that you need to make sure it’s well ventilated, as a small chicken coop can easily end up getting hot and stuffy during the warm summer months. Most chicken coop kits include plans for this kind of coop.
To make this kind of small coop you’ll usually need to use 12 lengths of pine or cedar wood. Chicken wire is always required to circle the frame – this is what helps to keep your chickens safer within the coop to make sure that predators won’t get to them.
The Arc
The chicken arc is another type of coop that’s especially popular, though not as much as the a-frame as it’s more complicated to build – but not too difficult that you can’t do it yourself. The good thing about choosing this kind of design is that it will give your chickens more space. They can go upstairs in the two-floor design to lay, or downstairs to graze. But because of this, it does take more wood and wire for this design.
Whatever kinds of small chicken coop plans you go for, make sure you buy some that have easy to follow guides, such as Building A Chicken Coop (the only kit I recommend).
